My Story
I'm Leo Pickford, a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with an MEng degree from Sheffield University and nearly 19 years’ experience in industry working for AstraZeneca (pharmaceuticals), Rolls-Royce (aeroengines) and Yusen (logistics). During this time, I have worked internationally, led the delivery of a wide range of physical and digital projects, as well as working in senior management roles in company strategy and business change. Most recently I have led projects to implement electric trucks and charging infrastructure, whilst I am proud to say that I was project manager for distribution of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine for Europe, where I oversaw middle stage distribution to 30 countries.
My interest in the energy transition first started in 2017 when I became an early adopter of Tesla vehicles. This was my lightbulb moment, if you’ll excuse the pun, and interest in cleantech and the energy transition grew from there. I quickly realised that every aspect of our economy and daily lives will soon pivot into a new order of operation. If one company obtains, stores and uses energy more efficiently and cost effectively than another, particularly in energy-intensive industries such as transport and logistics, then they are simply going to be more successful. However, this transition is not a simple one… It will be capital intensive and require exceptional digital capabilities, moreover each organisation will require a bespoke transition to fit its unique journey. Some companies will rush in and make costly mistakes, whilst others may leave it too late and miss out, hence it will be a fine balance and a time of significant upheaval.​​
